Values: A soft approach to education
Values: A soft approach to education
At Foraging Hands, we meet the child where they are and focus on the head, the hands, and the heart. The head is activated through thought-provoking, dialogue-rich, research-based ideas. The hands are engaged through hands-on experience and life skills. The heart is expanded through relationships, nature, and the slowness of what it means to be human.
Based on this child-led and nature-based curriculum, children have the opportunity to learn several modalities, including:
Handwork: sewing, knitting, crocheting, etc.
Practical life skills: land stewardship, woodworking, and nature etiquette
Environmental stewardship: gardening and composting, foraging, fire safety, and plant knowledge.
Artistic expression: Painting, drawing, sculpting, collage, and other creative forms.
Dramatic play: Role-playing, storytelling, and other forms of performance.
Music and movement: Singing, dancing, and playing instruments.
Written expression: Writing, reading, and using technology to communicate.
Mathematical thinking: Exploring patterns, shapes, and numbers.
Your child won’t sit at a desk all day or do worksheets. We have a soft approach to education, where the children lead us. Instead of putting children in front of computers all day, we use technology as a tool. We foster theory-making, prediction-making, and trial and error as forms of research. What drives their research is their genuine curiosity.
Through this intimate educational experience, children are comfortable being themselves and create long-lasting relationships with one another. We have a relationship-based approach where we learn to be in community, learn tools for conflict resolution, and emotional regulation. Each child plays a vital role in our collective, and we ask children to show up as the conscious and creative beings they are.
